Self-care for the self-employed: Does having a word of the year help?

Do you have a word of the year? In a world where there is so much noise from social media, so much choice, and constant decisions to be made, anything that helps to keep you true to yourself has got to be a good thing as far as I’m concerned.

And staying true to yourself is the utmost self-care. It is when we lose focus of our own wants and needs that we end up overwhelmed and burnt out, often with a side-helping of resentment, lack of confidence and feeling stuck. One of my missions as a coach is to help you feel the most “you” you’ve ever felt. There really is nothing like the freedom and deep sense of calm that comes from knowing yourself and taking action to meet your wants and needs.

Using a word of the year in business

In business in particular, everyone seems to have an opinion of how you “should” be running your business. Society is full of “rules”, but when you are self-employed / you run your own business, you get to make your own rules. Self-care for the self-employed means that you get to start work at midday if that’s what works for you. You get to take Mondays off to spend time with your family if you want. You can choose to accept no client calls before 11 if you want. Are you making your own rules or have you taken on society’s rules as your own?

Having a word of the year can be a guide for you, to help you make your own rules. It could help you do the things that you know nourish you so that you feel at your best in your business. Perhaps your word of the year might be a word of encouragement to do the things that are currently just outside your comfort zone.

What is my word of the year?

Well actually this year I’ve chosen three – as always, do what works for you… choose a new word each week or month, or choose a few words that feel good. I want to encourage myself to treat life and business as an experiment (as I regularly tell my clients to) – this takes care of any perfectionist tendencies as well as feeling more fun. It also feels like an invitation to go deeper with getting to know myself.


Last year taught me how good it feels to foster a deeper connection with like-minded people – as a very independent introvert, this doesn’t come naturally to me. I want to continue to build on that connection with friends, family, and fellow business buddies. I also want to be mindful in connecting what I’m doing with my overall goals and purpose – a reminder to myself to be intentional with my time and energy.


Instead of feeling the pressure to create new things in business, this will guide me to build on the amazing programmes I’ve already created. I also want to continue building a solid foundation for my life and business by consistently doing the things that I know make my mind and body feel good.

What do you do next with your word of the year?

Once you’ve chosen your word of the year, there’s no point in just forgetting it until next January. Remind yourself of it every day. When you have decisions to make, remind yourself of it. When you are struggling with motivation, remind yourself of it.

My words of the year have been key to helping me decide what to focus on in this first quarter. In particular, instead of creating new coaching programmes, I’m building on the successful programmes I launched last year. The Rebel Reset programme was a resounding success with all of the participants, and I’m excited to launch the programme again in the first few weeks of 2021. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of this programme so it really was a no-brainer to share the impact with another group of women.
